SA's changing energy mix

South Africa plans to add 105 000 MW of new generation capacity to the grid by 2039, according to Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the minister of electricity and energy, when he announced the release of the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan. Almost a third of this will come from wind (32%), and nearly a quarter from solar (24%). Gas (15%), energy storage (8%), and nuclear (5%) will also form part of the mix.

It is an ambitious target. South Africa’s current nominal generation capacity stands at 54 361 MW. Nominal capacity refers to the maximum output that power stations can produce under ideal conditions. If realised, the government’s plan would more than double total capacity over the next 14 years and dramatically reshape the country’s energy mix, reducing coal’s share from 58% to 27%, while tripling wind and doubling solar generation.

The plan also introduces gas as a new pillar of South Africa’s energy system, which Ramokgopa says will account for 11% of the energy mix by 2039. Together, wind, solar and gas will make up 53% of South Africa’s electricity mix.
